Associate Production Manager Book production, art direction, and interior book design for Little, Brown and Back Bay adult hardcover and paperback titles, both black-and-white and four-color. Interiors I’ve designed include Consider the Lobster and Oblivion by David Foster Wallace, Opus 25th Anniversary by Berkeley Breathed, Searching for the Sound by Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life, The Big Love, Misfortune, This is Burning Man and Dracula. I also design frontmatter quotes, reading group guides, and provide paperback reductions. Design duties include providing sample pages and revisions, comp orders to typesetters, file prep, manuscript markup, and checking pages for design issues. (1/03–present)
Marketing Production Manager Production for sales and marketing material, including point-of-purchase displays, posters, catalogs, postcards, and monthly sales pieces for Doubleday, Broadway, Nan A. Talese, Anchor, and other imprints. Duties include obtaining competitive bids from vendors, print buying, scheduling, checking files, design, copyediting, checking proofs for content and color, and creating and updating purchase orders. I also managed an ongoing project consolidating our book display information for online viewing. (6/00–2/02)
Production Manager Four-color catalog and book production. Duties included scheduling, managing editorial, hiring freelance copywriters, proofreaders and indexers, working closely with art directors on design, electronic layout, pre-press (scanning color images for publication, color corrections, image manipulation, flight-checking, and checking and marking up proofs), print and paper buying. Other duties include book design (covers and interiors) and catalog and promotional design. I provided cover files and wrote book descriptions for online booksellers such as amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and Borders. I assisted extensively with the production of two web sites (watsonguptill.com and hart2draw.com), designed CD-ROM versions of our catalogs, and maintained an archive for electronic files. Production Manager Editorial production of the four-color consumer title, Natural History. Duties included scheduling, extensive vendor contact, supervising editorial and production work flow, scanning, proofing, and color-correcting four-color art for publication, and all electronic pre-press. Additional duties included print estimating and buying; design and electronic pre-press for ads, brochures, and other promotional material, designing, coding and upkeep of the Natural History website, generating financial and budget reports, recommending hardware and software purchases, troubleshooting, and technical training for new and temporary employees.
